PRO-U5950.01A Custodial Eye Protection

The University strongly believes that eye protection is essential to the safety of custodians. Eye protection shall be worn when using chemicals or when changing light bulbs or fluorescent light tubes.

Action By:

Custodial Supervisors

  1. Provide appropriate eye protective equipment and training in the importance of eye protection to custodial staff.

Custodial Employees

  1. Wear eye protection in accordance with procedures.
  2. Recognize that failure to wear appropriate eye protection, as required by University policy and state regulation, may result in disciplinary action being taken.
  3. Must wear splash­-proof goggles provided by the University when working with or mixing undiluted chemicals having a pH of greater than 11 or less than 2.5.
  4. Should wear splash­-proof goggles but MAY wear eye shields or safety glasses with top and side shields provided by the University when working with chemicals having a pH between 2.5 and 11.
  5. Should wear splash­-proof goggles whenever chemicals are used in conditions posing a potential splash danger.
    1. Examples of procedures with possible splash danger include mixing chemicals or cleaning lavatories, bathrooms, or shower rooms.
  6. Shall wear eye protection when changing light bulbs and fluorescent light fixtures.
    1. Eye shields or safety glasses with top and side shields are recommended.
