Any physical space or virtual platform where an official course is taught by a faculty member.

Technology

Any nonmanual means of capturing audio-visual content.

Express Permission

To state directly, firmly, and explicitly in writing one’s acceptance of being recorded. Written permission could be stated on the syllabus, on the course website, by email, or through other means.

Policy Statements

1. Recording in Classrooms is Limited to Specified Circumstances

The use of technology to record audio-visual content in classrooms is prohibited without the express permission of the instructor, except when such recording is provided for by law, as described below. Recordings are for personal educational use only and may not be shared with others without the instructor's additional express permission to do so.

2. Disability Accommodations and Title IX Support Measures Will Be Recognized

Students with approved disability accommodations to record classroom content may do so provided that they follow the guidelines and agreements required by the Disability Access Center. The instructor for each class must be notified of the applicable disability accommodation. Similarly, students with Title IX support measures that require recording may do so in consultation with the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance. In any course, the instructor may deem it necessary to request that all recording be temporarily stopped.

3. Instructors Shall Notify Students When Courses are Recorded

Instructors who choose to record the audio-visual content of classes or portions of a class shall inform students either through the course syllabus, email, or verbally prior to recording. Instructors must exercise discretion in deciding whether to record discussions that involve sensitive topics or personally identifiable information, which constitutes a student record under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).
