Technology

Any nonmanual means of capturing audio-visual content.

Express Permission

To state directly, firmly, and explicitly in writing one’s acceptance of being recorded. Written permission could be stated in the syllabus, on the course website, by email or through other means.

Policy Statements

1. Recording in Classrooms is Limited to Specified Circumstances

The use of technology to record audio-visual content in classrooms is prohibited without the express permission of the instructor, except when such recording is provided for by law, as described below.

2. Disability Accommodations and Title IX Support Measures Will Be Recognized

Students with approved disability accommodations to record classroom content may do so provided that they follow the guidelines and agreements required by the Disability Access Center. Similarly, students with Title IX support measures that require recording may do so in consultation with the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance. The instructor for each course must be notified of the applicable accommodation.

3. Students will be Notified by the Instructor When the Instructor Records Classroom Content

Instructors who choose to record the audio-visual content of classes or portions of a class shall inform students either through the course syllabus, email, or verbally prior to recording.

4. Permitted Recordings are for Personal Educational Use Only and Discretion Must be Used Regarding Handling of Private Information

Where permission is granted for students to record, the recordings are for personal educational use only and may not be shared with any other person or organization without the instructor’s additional express permission to do so, unless permitted by an approved disability or Title IX accommodation.

Anyone permitted to record classroom content for educational or professional purposes must exercise discretion when recordings may include discussion of sensitive topics or disclosure of personally identifiable information. Personally identifiable student information constitutes a student record under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA).

Some units of the University may, consistent with this policy and other University policies, have additional restrictions on the handling of student records and private health information.
